Implementation Intentions
"Don't rely on willpower. Rely on planning."
💡 What Is It?
Developed by Peter Gollwitzer, Implementation Intentions use the format: If situation X occurs, then I will perform action Y. Unlike vague goals, if-then plans create automatic behavioral triggers. When the situation arises, you don't need willpower — the behavior activates on autopilot.

⏰ When to Use It
- You have goals but can never find the right moment
- You need to build new habits
- You frequently forget to do things
- Your environment easily pulls you off track
- You want to reduce decision fatigue
✋ How to Do It
- 1
Identify a trigger
Find a specific, recurring daily moment. E.g., after I pour my morning coffee.
- 2
Define a specific action
Not study but open my textbook and read 1 page.
- 3
Link them: If-Then
If I finish dinner and sit on the couch, then I open my laptop and write 1 sentence.
- 4
Rehearse the link
Repeat your if-then formula daily to strengthen the neural pathway.
- 5
Let it become automatic
After a few weeks, the behavior fires automatically when the trigger appears.
💡 Real-Life Example
"You want to read before bed. Your if-then plan: "If I turn off the bedside lamp, then I open my book and read one page." After a week, it is automatic — no willpower needed."
